About

Hi, I’m Jess.

Welcome to Skein and the Stitch! I’m an indie dyer, knitter, and fancy coffee fiend. My journey to my Yorkshire studio was a bit of an odyssey: moving from the US to the UK to complete a PhD in 18th-Century British Literature, before swapping academia for the dye pots. Along the way, I started a family and made Yorkshire my home.

Knitting started during my PhD as a desperate creative escape from research. During the 2020 lockdown, that passion evolved when I decided to experiment with hand-dyeing in my kitchen. Skein and the Stitch was born from that spark. It became the perfect way to bridge my academic background with my love for making, translating deep literary narratives into texture and colour. Today, my days are a whirlwind of formulating colourways, packing orders, and running the business, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

My work bridges the literary worlds I studied with the Yorkshire landscape that surrounds me. I gather inspiration from classic literature, art history, and the natural world, translating these narratives directly into texture and colour.

I specialise in luxury, non-superwash fibres that retain their natural warmth and character, including merino, silk, alpaca, and Bluefaced Leicester. A true milestone was creating Duo, our flagship base. Developed in 2026, this custom blend of Merino and Bluefaced Leicester offers the perfect balance of drape and bounce.

When I’m not at the dye pots, I’m usually spending time with my family, pottering around my garden, or diving headfirst into a brand-new creative hobby.

Thank you for bringing my work into your crafting space.
I can't wait to see what story you tell with it.
